The use of  "wish" and "hope"

Learners of English are sometimes not sure when to use the verb "wish" and when to use the verb "hope".

A wish expresses a desire for something that is different from the present reality:
Reality: "All the people in the world don't know how to read."
Wish:   " I wish all the people in the world knew how to read."

A hope expresses the desire for a future change in the present reality:
Reality:"Many of the world's women and girls have no access to education."
Hope:   " I hope that in the future the world's women and girls have full access to              education."
