:

The past perfect tense can be used to describe an action that began in the past -- that preceded another past action.
The past perfect is formed by using the past form of the verb have, that is, had,with the past participle of the main verb:

time
(a less distant time in the past)
      I  had heard about war-torn areas before I came to Dili.

Instructions:  in this exercise, put the verb  in parentheses in the correct form of the past perfect tense.   

Example:  (hear)  I had heard about war-torn areas before I came to Dili.
