This
unit describes some of the actions the United Nations is
taking to address the world crisis produced by the HIV-AIDS pandemic,
the first health issue ever taken up by the Security Council.
The reading passages tell of community
outreach projects, from those in small villages to those in
large urban centers, partnerships between local groups and UN
agencies. The
unit also describes direct efforts to help AIDS victims'
family members, particularly the many children whose parents
have died of AIDS-related illnesses.
The unit's structural focus is
the use of dependent and independent clauses, and its writing
task focuses on writing to inform. The listening exercise
continues the unit's theme. |
